Telugu film industry is second to none in using the most advanced technology. The films produced by Tollywood producers use sophisticated equipment, whether it is camera or equipment in the laboratory.

Guna Sekhar is known for employing lavish sets in his films and 'Sainikudu' cannot be an exception to it. Producer C Aswini Dutt is already very popular as a maker of heavy budget films. He never compromises on the quality and in erecting huge sets. The audiences cannot forget the Meenakshi Temple set erected for one of his films.

Now, for his latest film 'Sainikudu' he has spent money lavishly on a big village set for the flood shot, the Warangal Fort and other architecture sets and the specially erected bridge with sticks. The film has been shot with a very expensive Super 35 digital camera and the colour grading of some scenes and the songs were made by using Hollywood technology. The Digital Intermediate technology was used for certain scenes in colour grading and at the same time, the work was entrusted to an expert who worked for 'Lord of Rings' and other Hollywood films, from Germany. The Arriscan technology by Utsi has made all the difference and it has given a new experience to the audiences.

Siddhartha (Mahesh Babu) is a medical college student. He and his friends believe in serving the society like soldiers. They come across a goonda-turned-politician Pappu Yadav (Irfan Khan), who is robbing the society. Siddhartha decides to teach him a lesson and abducts his bride Varalakshmi (Trisha) when his marriage is about to take place. Siddhartha starts blackmailing Pappu and gets all the promises made in elections fulfilled. Siddhartha also proves how bad a guy Pappu is and how he implicated him and his friends in a blast case, with the help of his brother-in-law Mondi Nani and Varalakshmi. The film ends with Mondi Nani killing Pappu as the latter ditched him and tried to kill him.

Mahesh Babu has done complete justice to his role and Trisha looks pretty and has come up with a good performance. Debutant villain Irfan Khan has also performed neatly. The dubbing though, lacks the punch and power. Prakash Raj plays another villain. As far as fights are concerned, they are picturised in a very stylish way, while the choreography of songs is excellent. With the use of Digital Intermediate technology in colour grading, the songs look pleasing to the eyes. The production values of Vyjayanthi Movies are excellent. The conversation with the judge before the climax where the hero claims that the country needs youth and selfless politicians like Puchalapalli Sundaraiah, Abul Kalam Azad and Guljarilal Nanda, is worth watching. However, the director could have avoided the crude satire against TV channels.

Guna Sekhar-Mahesh Babu combination has always aroused lot of curiosity among the audiences and media. The picturisation of songs and stylish action scenes vouch for attention. Indeed, the duo has lived up to their names.

Review

Story

Way back in 1800's a Jamindar insults Durga Devi by try stealing her idol in the temple in a state of inebriation. An enraged Devi kills him and put a curse on his heirs that she is going to take one family member each every 48 years. And one male heir dies accidentally at the end of every 48 years. And the present year denotes end of another 48 years and the Target of Devi is none but our own Murari.

Murari is the Grandson of Sabari, whose husband died 48 years back because of the curse. She named her grandson with her hubby name Murari. Hence is called with utmost respect by all family members as 'garu' and 'andi'.

In another villages, there lives a beautiful city-bred belle called Vasundhara. She too lives with a big combined family and she is the cynosure of all eyes and affection in the family.

Both the families of Murari and Vasundhara are releated by blood, but separated due to the family feuds caused by the crooked villain Rambabu. Every year, Gopamma is allowed to go her parent's house without any escort from her husband. In the current year Murari manages to accompany Gopamma to her parent's house.

In this context we must know the relationship between Gopamma and Murari. Murari is the youngest brother of Gopamma's husband. But she treats Murari like her son. She even decides to go for abortion clandestinely so that she would not neglect once she has her own offspring. Murari calls her 'amma' all the time.

But Sabari, who returns from her Teerdha Yatra, upon being informed by the family poojari that Murari is the one who would be subjected to death by Devi this year, refuses for the marriage. Then she reveals the dark secret that is kept under wraps that once in every 48 years, one of the family members are taken by Devi as bali.

The rest of the story is about how Murari overcomes the curse by Devi and marries his sweetheart Vasundhara. To experience this beautiful scenic classic film by the creative genius Krishna Vamsi, you must watch this sensible musical love story on the silver screen with good audio equipment.

Performances:

Artists:

Mahesh Babu: Mahesh Babu, as a complete actor, did his role with zest. His mannerisms are straight take-off from that of Superstar Krishna's from Bapu's classic 'Saakshi'. We can see another avatar of Mahesh Babu in this film. He did not show off his manliness or heroism in this film. He confined his acting to the role specifications. You can see the character of Murari in this film, but not the heartthrob of millions of teenage girls Mahesh Babu. In this film, Mahesh used Mantra T-shirts extensively.

Sonali Bendre: Krishna Vamsi told me that Tabu is only the alternative Heroine, who looks as sexily and sensuously in saree as Sridevi. He seems to have found a replacement for Sridevi and Sonali in the form of Sonali Bendre who looked as sexy and sensuous as Tabu and Sridevi. She is simply breath stopping in this by displayed all her cinematic charms in this film with instant spontaneity.

Lakshmi: This film has two heroines. One is Laxmi and another one is Sonali Bendre. Everyone in the theater will fall in love with the benevolent character of Lakshmi. And she did full justice for her character and we cannot imagine any other actress doing that role.

Gollapudi and Satya Narayana: It's quite refreshing to see Gollapudi and Kaikala Satyanarayana in this film. Both of them did excel in their roles and Satyanarayana being given more footage.

Technical Departments:

Editing, Story, Screenplay & direction: Another classical love story comes out of the genius Krishna Vamsi. For a change this time, Krishna Vamsi handled the onus of editing too in addition to story, screenplay and direction. Right from the frame one to the last scene, the mark of Krishna Vamsi is evident. Be it in canning the cute prank scenes between Murari and Vasundhara, or picturing the scenes containing the action of Gopamma (Laxmi), who remembers our own mother at house, who tends to get tears whenever she suspects anything that is going wrong. Though this is a slow paced love story, the violent touch of Krishna Vamsi is intact. Just like he did in Ninne Pelladatha (Where Nag slaps Tabu violently when she is about top die in the climax), Anthaputram (where Jagapathi Babu smokes a cigarette with gay abandon when he was shot with a bullet, this film to has Mahesh babu applying soil to the wounds in the climax.

Camera: The photography is another bright asset of the film. Bhupati made that all the money spent in the production is visible on the screen.

Production: Gopi Nandigam, has spend money unconditionally, all for his favorite hero Krishna's son. 80% of the film is shot with houses decorated using flowers and banana leaves.

Music: Music is another assets of the film. The songs as well as the background music are equally good.

Analysis: The credit for the success or failure of this film should go to the Krishna Vamsi. He is the Sri Krishna of the film and Mahesh Babu is Arjuna of the film. Arjuna has followed all the instructions of SriKrishna with finesse of the perfect craftsman. Now, it's the audience turn to decide, weather Krishna Vamsi as Srikrishna did make his moves in the right direction or not. This film is bound get a little bit of dissent from the viewers of C class areas. But, this film is classic masterpiece for the class audience and highly recommended for the Mahesh and Krishnavamsi fans. In comparison, this film does not even come close to Ninne Pelladatha, though the storyline is similar except for the divine angle of it. This film will be a good fare for the people if they watch this film with no expectations. Just watch this film to experience Krishna Vamsi paint the silver screen with his

Trivia

Mahesh Babu,

Dialogues: Dialogues in this film are apt and well measured. Paruchuri brothers have done neat job in dialogues department. There are few effective mass dialogues in the film that elevated situations.

1. Mahesh: 'Nenu Kurnool Kabaddi aadataatiki Vachaanu. Kaani vere aata aadavalasi vachindi'
2. Prakash Raj to Mukesh Rushi (while taking Mahesh Babu in a Sumo to kill him): Em ACP! Nee kodukuni teesukuveltaante neeku tension gaa vunda?
Mukesh Rushi to Prakash Raj: 'avunu. Tension gaa vundi. Naa koduku gurinchi kaadu. Mee gurinchi'
3. Mahesh to Prakash Raj: 'Tella chokka vesukunna prativaadu factionist kaadu'
4. The dialogues where Bhumika humiliates Prakash Raj by talking about magatanam

Mahesh Babu,

Photography: Photography by Sekhar V Joseph is excellent. Cinematography is one of the outstanding aspects of Okkadu.

Sets: Set work by Ashok Kumar is very good. The 2 crore worth Charminar set is very good. And the devadas kind of set for the last song in this film is also exceptionally good.

Editing: Editing by Srikar Prasad is crisp. His sharp editing kept the pace of film in good condition.

Lyrics: As said by Sirivennela in audio function, the songs of the film are interlaced in the narration of story. All songs narrated the storyline and the mood of the film.

Mahesh Babu,

Stunts: Stunts for this film are extraordinary. The stunts have rich technique associated with it, but at the same time the mass fights (naatu kottudu) are rightly composed to enthrall the masses. First fight and last fight of the film are extraordinary.

Music: Mani Sharma has given excellent songs and background music. He can be proud of his 50th film. Here is the sequence of songs in the film

Athadu

Story:
Nandu (Mahesh Babu) a professional killer is hired by Shiva Reddy (Sayaji Shinde) a political leader to stage a fake murder on him to gain public sympathy and votes! But the plan turn awry as Reddy is killed by another hit man (Sonu Sood). But the cops (Charan Raj) is hot on his heels and in a mix-up they shoot Parthu (Rajeev Kanakala) a runaway who is on his way back to his village after 12 long years! Now Nandu impersonates as Parthu and goes to his village and his family. Soon he becomes a part of that family and helps his grandfather (Nassar) to solve some vexing problems through his brawn and wealth. He also falls in love with Poori (Trisha) but the CBI led by a determined officer (Prakash Raj) is after Nandu which leads to the climax.

The following scenes of the film are brilliant -

1. The first shot where kid shoots while serving tea.
2. The rewinding scene in which Mahesh stabs somebody in old city
3. Mahesh's bargain with Kota over telephone
4. Mahesh telling heroine that she is not beautiful
5. Mahesh delivering cash to poojari
6. Mahesh first encounter with Tanikella
7. Mahesh's fight with Brahmaji
8. Brahmanandam comedy episode (nuts & bolts)
9. Mahesh's last encounter with Kota

Photography: Photography of the film is terrific. The camera angles, shot framing, lighting effects and camera movements are appropriate to the respective scenes. A tint is used for the first half an hour of the film which made this film appear like the Hollywood films made with Mexican backdrop. Cinematographer KV Guhan deserves a pat on his back for his fine work.

Fights: Fights by Peter Hynes are excellent. All the fights in this film are powerful and natural looking. Only for the fights in climax wires and threadwork was used. Two separate fights involving Tanikella Bharani and Brahmaji have lots of humor injected in them. It is very difficult to make the fights appeal to Andhra audiences when shootout (pistol) is involved. But the shootouts in this film are an exception.

Dialogues: Trivikram is known for his punch comedy dialogues. This film has limited punch dialogues compared his earlier film, which is understandable because this story does not allow more comedy scenes. Still, the comedy dialogues written for Dharmavarapu and Brahmanandam are good. The way Trivikram compared how things appear beautiful when you watch them at the right moments by comparing formation of love to a beautiful moonlight is very thoughtful. His satire on using Sumos in killings is good.

Music: Music by Mani Sharma is good. The picturization of the first song (title song) which comes as background song for titles is wonderful. 'Pilla gaali allari' is a teasing song between the lead pair in house set with other artists participating in. Neetho Cheppana song has got typical Mexican music that is shot in abroad. Lots of bleaching shots were used in this song. The last song 'Pilichina Ranantava' has something for fans to cheer about. However, the songs in this film (except for the 1st song) form as the speed breaker to the narration. Background music and rerecording of the film is good.

Other departments: Editing by Srikar Prasad is good. Lyrics by Sirivennela are very good, as usual. Artwork by Thota Tharani is adequate. Production values by Jayabheri banner are grand.

AUDIO:

Audio of Mahesh Babu's Athadu was released by Superstar Krishna at the house set of the film constructed at Nanakramguda. This album consists of six melodies composed by Mani Sharma. Maruthi Music has bought the rights of this audio. This simple function was attended by Krishna, Mahesh Babu, Trisha, D Kishore, Murali Mohan and Pawan (Maruthi Music).
